Does a name make a person?

planettampon:

I don’t know why, but I associate names with traits and personalities. Like, for example:

  • Rachel’s are bitches
  • Scott’s are vindictive and cruel
  • Amanda’s are boisterous and obnoxious
  • Sarah’s are chubby and sad
  • William’s are socially retarded
  • Matthew’s are awkward yet intriguing
  • Jenny’s are dainty and old
  • Crystal’s are butch
  • Andrew’s are effeminate
  • Michael’s are athletic and masculine

I’m like, 70% sure if I wasn’t named Blair, I would be a completely different person to who I am now. My parents have told me that I was almost an Elijah, but they settled for Blair. Am I a “Blair”? Does “Blair” have a stereotypical personality? Or not so much “stereotypical” but maybe just “predictable”. I don’t use these preconceived perceptions when I meet a new Sarah or Amanda or Michael, but they just turn out to be like what I expect of their name? It’s not like one person forever taints a name, either. But is that me believing I have false perceptions on people? Or are personalities predictable because of a name? It’s midnight, I should go to bed.

I ALWAYS think about this. Always.

For me, Sarah’s are thin and athletic Type-A’s.

I agree about the Williams and Amandas and Michaels.  Spot on.

More:

  • Jake’s are self-centered.
  • Ben’s are nerdy in a good way.
  • Kate’s are interesting petite girls.
  • Caroline’s are outgoing.
  • Sean’s are likeable but awkward.
  • Sophie’s are devoted friends.
  • Zack’s are musicians. (Isaac’s are scrawny frisbee playing jewish ones.)
  • Olivia’s are eccentrics.
  • Greg’s are macho on the outside, soft on the inside.
  • Beth’s are milquetoast.
  • Maddy’s are social butterflies.
  • Zoe’s are creative.
  • David’s are incredibly intelligent.
  • Max’s are usually fascinating, or else, completely dull.

I strongly stand by these statements.

Clearly there are always anomalies, proving of course that one’s name is what the person makes it, which obviously I believe in.

However, there is something to be said, I think, for the way that knowing multiple people with the same name, or even one exeedingly awful or great person with that name, has an effect on how we view that name. I will always be biased towards Dana’s and Miriam’s. I already have a bias towards Max’s and Matt’s. Common names like Emily and Ali dont really have an effect, but certain names will always make me think of certain things……

Although, in name-effect’s defense, I was almost named OONA, and I’m pretty sure that would have had an effect on my life.
